How to become a writer - advice #9

Today, quite extensive topic that I will show you just a little. Killing heroes. Good or bad?

You want to kill the hero but you're not sure if you should? First of all, you should not kill heroes in meaningless ways, eg. The hero survived World War III but flu killed him. Of course, if you want you can do so but the reader will be unhappy, and as I explained earlier: disgruntled reader is not good. You can do so provided that you want in this way to present something, eg. There are things on which we have no influence or before death there is no escape. But if you want to do something like that i suggest to announce publicly what means the fragment. Moment but after a couple of posts ago I wrote that you should not creep reader response under his nose. This is true but sometimes the reader can not guess something, he will think a little and start getting angry by senseless - according to him - the death of a hero with whom he could (I'm not sure if this is the good word)to grow accustomed. In this case, if it become conscious about what you mean, probably he will find out that you are right and accept situations.Of course, if you want to kill the hero who is in the book there for five minutes - do not hesitate. The reader probably just forget about him for the next three pages. With such heroes, no one hesitates and therefore I assume that you mean a substantial, perhaps even the main character. So how do you kill a hero - if you already? I proposes spectacularly, of course, it not necessarily he must save the world surrounded by hundreds of explosions - remember: it's a book, not a movie. His death should have meaning to hold in memory eg. Anti-social hero dedicates life to save a friend. You should also remember that it was not contrary to the whole figure. You might think that just such a contradiction exists in the example above, you could be right, but it all depends on what happens between the first appearance of the hero and the time of his death. If at this time the hero has changed - we are constantly working on the example above - and began to appreciate some people but did not show it - in then it makes sense. Now that you know how to and how to not kill the characters, you will learn when you should do it. If the main character die it's always at the end of the book, so if you want to create an amazing twist, you can break the template but first consider whether it is a good idea. It is also quite risky way for twist by death: first kill him, then in any (reasonable) way revive but it's a topic for another post, and if you would like to read about it, tell me about it in the comment. I would be forgotten, there is one important thing binding with today's topic: by killing the hero you can easy manipulate the emotions of the reader. If you wish to arouse hostility in the reader to the antagonist just make hero - that everybody likes - suffer and even - but not necessarily - was killed because of the antagonist.

IN BRIEF:
-Killing episodic characters usually doesn't carry negative consequences,
-Cause of the death should be reasonable,
-Using The death of the hero you can easily manipulate the feelings of the reader,
-Good to think about do you really want to kill a character,
-You Can create a good twist
